Depending on which bit of the internet you believe Fathers Day is celebrating its 100th anniversary this year on June 16th.

Apparently it all began when a young woman in Spokane, Washington sat in church in May of 1909 listening to a Mother’s Day sermon. Sonora Smart Dodd decided she also wanted a day to honour her dad;  William Jackson Smart, a Civil War veteran and a single parent who raised six children.

In 1966, President Lyndon B. Johnson issued the first presidential proclamation honouring fathers, designating the third Sunday in June as Father’s Day. Six years later, the day was made a permanent national holiday in the US when President Richard Nixon signed it into law in 1972.
